DR. ALEX OTTI IS BUILDING A NEW ABIA
Governor Alex Otti’s administration is focused on results, responsible governance and the long-term transformation of Abia State. While opposition voices continue to generate headlines, the government remains committed to rebuilding infrastructure, strengthening education, revitalising healthcare, expanding economic opportunities and restoring public confidence in leadership.
The recent concerns raised by retired Permanent Secretaries over outstanding gratuities deserve attention and respectful engagement. These senior citizens served Abia State with dedication and are entitled to receive what is legitimately owed to them. The Otti administration recognises the seriousness of inherited pension and gratuity obligations and remains committed to addressing them through proper verification, transparent documentation and sustainable payment arrangements.
The challenge did not begin under Governor Otti. For many years, unpaid pensions, gratuities and other entitlements accumulated because previous administrations failed to establish a reliable and financially sustainable system. Governor Otti inherited this enormous burden alongside decaying infrastructure, weak institutions and competing demands on limited public resources. His government is now working to clear verified obligations responsibly without returning Abia to reckless borrowing, financial disorder or unsustainable political promises.
The administration’s approach is based on prudence. It is better to verify records, remove irregularities and establish a credible payment system than to make empty announcements that cannot be implemented. Governor Otti understands that retired workers deserve dignity, certainty and justice. The government must therefore continue engaging them openly while ensuring that every genuine beneficiary receives fair treatment.
The allegation that the administration has neglected workers and pensioners must also be placed in proper perspective. Governor Otti met a public service weakened by years of poor funding, unpaid obligations and institutional neglect. Since assuming office, his administration has prioritised regular salary payments, improved financial discipline and the restoration of confidence within the public service.
Workers’ welfare cannot be reduced to political slogans. It requires a government that can pay salaries consistently, manage public finances responsibly and implement reforms that will remain sustainable beyond one political season. The Otti administration is working to build such a system—one that protects workers today and guarantees the future security of pensioners.
The opposition’s description of Governor Otti as “The Painter” is an attempt to trivialise the importance of road rehabilitation and urban renewal. Reconstructing damaged roads, restoring drainage systems, installing streetlights and improving public spaces are not cosmetic exercises. These interventions reduce travel time, protect lives, revive businesses, raise property values and reconnect communities that were abandoned for years.
A road does not become unnecessary because it was originally constructed by a previous government. Responsible leadership is not about neglecting existing infrastructure merely to claim ownership of entirely new projects. It is about maintaining what is useful, rebuilding what has failed and creating new infrastructure where necessary. Governor Otti is therefore correcting years of decay while simultaneously laying the foundation for future development.
Beyond road rehabilitation, the administration is pursuing major projects and reforms across the state. The Abia Airport project is designed to improve connectivity, attract investment and open the state to wider economic opportunities. Industrial and technology initiatives are intended to support innovation, manufacturing, entrepreneurship and job creation.
In education, the government is investing in school rehabilitation, improved learning environments and the gradual development of modern classrooms. In healthcare, attention is being given to the revitalisation of public facilities so that Abians can access better care without travelling outside the state for basic treatment.
The Otti administration is also restoring confidence in Aba as a commercial and industrial centre. Improved roads, stronger institutions and a more predictable business environment are essential to unlocking the potential of local manufacturers, traders, artisans and small businesses. Every rehabilitated road, upgraded market and renewed public facility contributes directly to economic growth.
Governor Otti did not come into office to manage decline. He came to restore hope, rebuild confidence and secure a more prosperous future for Abia State. His administration may not solve every inherited problem at once, but the direction is clear, the reforms are visible and the foundation for sustainable development is being laid.
Constructive criticism remains important in a democracy. Retirees, workers, journalists, political parties and ordinary citizens have every right to question the government. However, criticism should be based on facts, fairness and an honest assessment of the conditions inherited by the administration and the progress already recorded.
Abia cannot be rebuilt through propaganda, insults or political mockery. It will be rebuilt through disciplined leadership, prudent financial management, infrastructure development, institutional reform and collective responsibility.
The administration must continue to listen, communicate and respond to legitimate concerns. It must also remain firm against misinformation and attempts to reduce serious governance reforms to political entertainment.
Governor Alex Otti’s focus remains clear: service, development and the transformation of Abia for the benefit of all.
