Qatar Begins Active Combat Operations Against Iran

Qatari military has begun active combat operations to defend its territory following Iranian missile and drone strikes that hit several Qatari cities on March 2, 2026.

The Qatari Ministry of Defense confirmed it is now deploying fighter planes to shoot down Iranian projectiles over the waters of the Gulf.

The country’s air forces successfully shot down two Iranian warplanes, along with seven missiles and five drones.

Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Majed Al Ansari, stated that while they are not engaging in a broader war “at the moment,” the attacks cannot be left without retaliation and that Tehran “must pay a price” for the aggression.

The Escalation
Iranian missiles struck two energy sites in Qatar and targeted Hamad International Airport (HIA), leading to the suspension of all flight operations.

Qatar Energy has suspended the production of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) following these strikes. These strikes are part of a wider retaliatory wave from Iran following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes that reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran specifically targeted Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military facility in the Middle East, located in Qatar.

Qatar, which has historically maintained a neutral or mediating role between Iran and the West, is now coordinating closely with other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members and the United States in response to these direct violations of its sovereignty.
