EROSION ALERT: AMAEKPU OHAFIA — GULLY THREATENS HOMES BEHIND COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Residents of Amaekpu Ohafia in Ohafia LGA have raised fresh alarm over a fast-expanding gully erosion behind Amaekpu Community School, along Onyirimba Road.

The gully, close to the compound of Mrs. Chioma Ekea Onyirimba, has continued to deepen after recent heavy rains, threatening nearby homes, farmlands, and the school fence. Locals say if urgent steps are not taken, part of the school premises and adjoining buildings could be swallowed.

This Onyirimba Road / Bakassi Avenue site is one of the seven major erosion sites in Ohafia that the Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Environment declared as death traps in 2025. The community says it is contending with massive gullies that have already made residents live in constant fear.

“We are in real danger. Whenever it rains, the way it uproots trees and moves earth sounds like an earthquake,” residents lamented in previous cries for help.

Amaekpu community is now appealing to Governor Alex Otti, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa (Arochukwu/Ohafia Rep), Ohafia LGA Mayor Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, and NEWMAP/Ecological Fund Office to urgently include Onyirimba Road in emergency intervention.
