X-Raying Governor Otti’s Bold Tourism Vision

The dynamism in global oil prices has exposed Nigeria’s vulnerabilities, including Abia State’s, highlighting the need for economic diversification. While agriculture is often touted as the “messianic industry,” Abia State’s tourism sector, as the governor is revamping, will attract substantial foreign exchange earnings.

Recent reform efforts seem to point to this fact. Abia State, like Nigeria, defines tourism broadly as arts and culture, nature, conservation, and other aspects. Dr Alex Chioma Otti is mirroring Rwanda, South Africa, and Ghana. Abia State’s approach remains promising.
Examples are, investment in arts and culture, tapping its tourism potential, modernizing arts and culture practices, and attracting global tourists.

Abia State’s geographical landscape, featuring coastal beaches along the Imo River, historic sites like the Long Juju Shrine of Arochukwu, rolling hills and lush vegetation, UNESCO-recognized heritage centers, and diverse cultural festivals wil position her as a niche destination.

According to the World Economic Forum’s 2017 tourism report, travel and tourism can contribute only 0.5% to Abia State’s GDP and the governor is not resting until this industry booms, surpassing the hay days of Calabar Carnival. In contrast, African leaders like Seychelles, Cape Verde, and Mauritius see contributions of 20%, 17%, and 12% respectively as their respective strategies fuel outbound travel to destinations like Ghana and South Africa, resulting in revenue boom.

By reorienting its tourism strategy, Abia State under Otti is developing infrastructure, enhancing security, modernizing arts and culture, promoting nature-based tourism and attract international tourists.

Unlocking Abia State’s tourism potential will drive economic growth, create jobs, and showcase its unique cultural and natural heritage.
