HON. IKENNA UKWA’S FOOTPRINT IN MY ALMA MATER, FGC OHAFIA: FROM AN OLD STUDENT WITH GRATITUDE
Some projects touch you differently, especially when they happen in a place that holds a part of your own story.
Federal Government College, Ohafia is my alma mater. As a proud member of the pioneer second set, I was there when the school was still finding its feet. I saw the early days, the challenges, the gradual growth, and today, I look back with pride at how far the school has come.
That is why the sight of the newly completed Girls’ Hostel attracted to FGC Ohafia by Hon. Ikenna Nicolas Ukwa gives me a feeling that is difficult to put into words.
I think about the young girls who will live there, the nights they will spend studying for examinations, and the dreams they will carry from those rooms into the wider world. Years from now, many of them may not know the story behind the building, but they will benefit from it.
And for that, as an old student, I sincerely say, thank you, Chief Ikenna Ukwa.
And then there comes the solar-powered streetlights he installed within the school environment. This one takes me straight back to our own days.
When we started at FGC Ohafia, there was no electricity and certainly no streetlights to brighten our paths at night. We depended on our kerosene lamps (our good old Lantan) to find our way around the school. Those of us who were there will remember those nights. So, when I see solar lights illuminating that same environment today, I understand how much such an intervention means.
For me, this is not just another project to write about. This is my alma mater. I saw where we started, and seeing someone add something this meaningful to the school genuinely makes me happy.
Thank you, Hon. Ikenna Nicolas Ukwa. As an old student of FGC Ohafia, this one is close to my heart.
