THE CHIKADIBIA CASE: DISTINGUISHING FACTS FROM POLITICAL PROPAGANDA

The recent demand by the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, RULAAC, for the release of the investigation report concerning the Chikadibia family deserves serious attention.
However, it must be reported accurately, without twisting the facts to create a false political narrative against the Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, OFR.
RULAAC did not state that Governor Otti ordered the arrest, detention or demolition of the Chikadibia family residence.
Rather, the allegations concern actions reportedly carried out during a police operation at Alaukwu in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area on 12 April 2025.
Members of the family allegedly suffered arrest, prolonged detention and prosecution, while their house was reportedly demolished and property removed.
These are grave allegations. They demand investigation, accountability and justice.
But allegations must not be deliberately converted into established facts, and responsibility must not be falsely transferred to Governor Otti merely because he is the Governor of Abia State.
THE GOVERNOR ORDERED AN INVESTIGATION
The public record shows that RULAAC petitioned Governor Otti on 6 March 2026, seeking intervention, accountability and restorative justice for the family.
In response, Governor Otti reportedly directed that the matter be investigated.
RULAAC acknowledged this intervention and participated in the investigation by providing information to the official assigned to examine the allegations.
The present controversy is therefore not that Governor Otti refused to investigate the matter.
The issue is that the findings of the investigation have reportedly not been made public several months after the Governor’s directive.
RULAAC consequently wrote a follow-up letter on 20 June 2026 and has now asked the Governor to ascertain the status of the investigation and release its findings.
DO NOT MANUFACTURE A FALSE HEADLINE
The accurate headline is:
RULAAC ASKS GOVERNOR OTTI TO RELEASE THE REPORT OF AN INVESTIGATION HE ORDERED INTO ALLEGED POLICE ABUSES.
It is misleading to suggest that RULAAC accused Governor Otti of personally ordering the arrest or demolition.
No credible record presented in the reports establishes such a claim.
The Governor’s documented involvement was to direct an investigation after the allegations were brought to his attention.
Those attempting to turn a human-rights complaint against certain police actions into an allegation that Governor Otti ordered the demolition are either misreading the reports or deliberately misleading the public.
TRANSPARENCY MUST NOW FOLLOW
Nevertheless, ordering an investigation is only the beginning of accountability.
The report should not be allowed to disappear into an administrative cupboard.
Governor Otti should urgently request the completed findings, make the outcome public within the limits permitted by law and act on any recommendations arising from the investigation.
Where officers or public officials are found culpable, they should face appropriate disciplinary or legal consequences.
Where allegations are not substantiated, the public should equally be informed.
The family deserves to know the truth. The police deserve an opportunity to respond to the allegations. The people of Abia deserve transparent closure.
The allegations include the undocumented removal of cash, household property and valuables, as well as the destruction of the family’s home and means of livelihood. RULAAC has also requested compensation, resettlement, educational assistance and psychosocial support for the surviving family members. These demands remain dependent on the findings of a fair investigation and any competent judicial determination.
ACCOUNTABILITY STRENGTHENS GOVERNMENT
A responsible government does not protect wrongdoing.
It investigates allegations, publishes credible findings and ensures that justice is done.
Governor Otti demonstrated responsiveness by ordering an investigation. He should now complete that process by ensuring that the report is released and its recommendations implemented.
This is not an invitation for political opportunists to manufacture allegations against the Governor.
It is an opportunity for the administration to demonstrate that the New Abia is governed by law, transparency and respect for human dignity.
The truth is simple:
RULAAC did not establish that Governor Alex Otti ordered the arrest or demolition of the Chikadibia family home.
RULAAC acknowledged that the Governor ordered an investigation.
RULAAC is now demanding the publication of the investigation’s findings.
The distinction is clear.
Let the report be released.
Let every person found culpable be held accountable.
Let justice be done without propaganda, political manipulation or protection of the powerful.
