A GOVERNMENT THAT NOTICES MERIT: THE MICHAEL OFFORKAILE EXAMPLE

A good government does not only build roads, rehabilitate schools and improve public infrastructure. It also identifies excellence, rewards hard work and creates opportunities for gifted young people to fulfil their potential.
Governor Alex Otti, OFR, has demonstrated this responsibility through the support extended to Master Michael Offorkaile, an Abia-born student who scored an outstanding 367 in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
By receiving the student, his parents and representatives of his school at the Government House in Umuahia, Governor Otti sent a clear message: academic excellence matters in the New Abia.
More importantly, the Governor directed the relevant ministry to ensure that the young scholar receives the necessary support for his university education.
This is more than a personal intervention. It is a public statement about the values of the administration.
For many years, brilliant students across Nigeria have struggled because of financial hardship, limited opportunities and the absence of institutional support. Some have abandoned their ambitions, not because they lacked intelligence or discipline, but because no one noticed their potential.
Governor Otti’s response changes that narrative.
By supporting Michael Offorkaile, the Abia State Government is encouraging thousands of other students to work harder. It is telling parents that their sacrifices are meaningful and reminding schools that academic excellence deserves recognition.
The intervention also reflects a deeper understanding of development. Roads, bridges and public buildings are important, but the greatest asset of any society is its people. Investing in an exceptional student today may produce a doctor, engineer, researcher, entrepreneur or national leader tomorrow.
This is how responsible governments build the future.
The Michael Offorkaile example shows that Governor Otti’s administration is not indifferent to merit. It recognises achievement and is prepared to support those who distinguish themselves through discipline and hard work.
The lesson is simple and powerful: in the New Abia, excellence will not be ignored.
Governor Otti is building infrastructure, but he is also building confidence, hope and human capital.
That is the mark of a government that notices merit.
