GOVERNOR OTTI’S GOVERNMENT SPENDS WISELY, NOT RECKLESSLY
The latest attempt to manufacture a scandal around Governor Alex Otti from the ₦1.003 billion entry in the 2025 Accountant-General’s Report deserves a response grounded in common sense, accounting discipline and the government’s actual spending record.
The allegation is sensational: “Otti spent ₦1.003 billion on just two Hilux vehicles.” Divide the figure by two, scream ₦501 million per vehicle, design a frightening poster, tag everybody from Sowore to the World Bank and Basketmouth, and suddenly an accounting entry has become proof of corruption.
Not so fast.
The most compelling evidence in Governor Otti’s defence comes from the records of the same Abia State Government.
In the 2024 Accountant-General’s Report, the Otti administration recorded the procurement of two Toyota Hilux vans AND one Hummer bus for ₦130 million.
Again, in the 2025 budget, five Toyota Hilux vehicles for General Hospitals were provided for at ₦250 million — approximately ₦50 million per vehicle.
These are not figures invented by Otti’s supporters. They are contained in government financial records.
So which proposition is more reasonable: that an administration with documented vehicle procurements around these price ranges inexplicably decided to pay more than ₦500 million for one ordinary Hilux, or that the ₦1.003 billion accounting entry requires proper contextual interpretation before being converted into a corruption headline?
That is precisely where responsible financial analysis must begin.
Government accounts are not Facebook arithmetic. A project description appearing on an expenditure schedule does not necessarily provide every component, specification, associated equipment, adjustment or accounting treatment sitting behind the expenditure recorded against that project code.
Governor Otti’s broader record also matters. This is an administration rebuilding roads, renovating and constructing schools, improving health facilities, investing in security, cleaning up Aba and Umuahia and restoring public infrastructure after years of accumulated decay. Such a government should be assessed from the totality of its expenditure outcomes, not condemned through one isolated line interpreted in the most politically damaging manner possible.
There is an even greater irony.
The document being paraded as the great discovery against Otti is an Accountant-General’s Report made available by the Abia State Government itself.
Think about that.
A government supposedly determined to conceal financial wrongdoing is simultaneously publishing the financial records from which its opponents manufacture allegations against it.
That is not evidence of a government running away from accountability. It is evidence of an administration creating an increasingly open fiscal environment in which government expenditure can be examined, questioned and debated.
Governor Alex Otti has demonstrated through observable projects across Abia that public resources can be converted into roads, schools, hospitals, urban renewal and other public assets.
That is what prudent public expenditure ultimately means: citizens should be able to see what government money is doing.
Criticism is legitimate. Accountability is indispensable. But sensational arithmetic should never be substituted for financial analysis.
And before anyone summons Sowore, Okonjo-Iweala, Tinubu, Peter Obi, BBC, World Bank, Linda Ikeji and Basketmouth to witness another supposed scandal, perhaps he should first understand the accounting document he is circulating.
Governor Otti’s government spends wisely, not recklessly.
The evidence should lead the argument.
Not the noise.
