GOVERNOR OTTI’S UK ENGAGEMENT IS STRATEGIC REPRESENTATION—NOT AN OSTENTATIOUS EXCURSION

The attempt to portray Governor Alex C. Otti’s official engagement at the University of Northampton as a waste of Abia State’s resources is based largely on speculation, not evidence.

Governor Otti was formally invited as a keynote speaker at the University’s Centre for the Advancement of Racial Equality annual conference. The conference brought together academics, researchers, professionals and community leaders to discuss leadership, racial justice, education, social cohesion and international partnerships.

His keynote address, titled “Of Bridges and Walls: Finding Common Grounds, Rising Above Divisions,” was therefore not a casual diaspora gathering or political jamboree. It was an international academic and policy platform.

The critic claims that first-class tickets “may have been booked” and that accommodation “could have cost millions.” The expressions “may have” and “could have” reveal that no ticket, invoice, expenditure record or official financial document was produced. Public accountability cannot be built upon imagined figures.

International engagement is not automatically wasteful. Responsible governments use such platforms to:

  • promote their states to investors and development partners;
  • establish relationships with universities and professional institutions;
  • engage citizens and professionals in the diaspora;
  • attract knowledge, technology and institutional partnerships; and
  • present successful local reforms before an international audience.

The suggestion that an African leader has nothing to contribute to a Western audience is deeply unfortunate. Leadership knowledge does not belong exclusively to Europe. Africans are not intellectually inferior, and Nigeria’s development challenges do not disqualify credible Nigerian leaders from participating in global conversations.

Governor Otti is an economist, former bank chief executive and serving governor leading visible reforms in infrastructure, healthcare, education, transportation and public-sector administration. He has both professional experience and governance lessons worthy of international discussion.

Western political, academic and institutional leaders regularly travel abroad to speak, teach, negotiate and build partnerships. Nigeria should not isolate itself from the same global networks.

It is legitimate to demand transparency regarding public expenditure. However, it is misleading to declare a properly documented international invitation wasteful without producing evidence of extravagance, inflated costs or improper spending.

Youth empowerment and international engagement are not mutually exclusive. A serious government can create opportunities at home while simultaneously building relationships abroad that may generate investment, institutional cooperation and employment.

THE GOVERNOR WAS INVITED—HE DID NOT INVITE HIMSELF.

GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT IS NOT WASTEFULNESS.

ABIA MUST PARTICIPATE WHERE IDEAS, PARTNERSHIPS AND OPPORTUNITIES ARE BEING CREATED.
