Otti and the Recovery of Labour Party

By Ebere Uzoukwa, PhD

The recovery of the Labour Party under the leadership of Governor Alex Chioma Otti may appear surprising to some, but not to those familiar with his capacity, competence and measured approach to leadership.

An amiable and strategic leader, Governor Otti is known for his calculated decisions and near meticulous execution. At a critical moment, he chose to take decisive steps to reclaim the political platform that brought him to Government House in 2023, rather than leave it in the hands of desperate political opportunists. His early grooming in the private sector clearly prepared him for moments that demand courage, clarity and firm action.

This resilience and sound political calculation yielded a defining outcome on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, when the Court of Appeal reaffirmed Senator Nenadi Usman as the authentic Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, despite efforts by Julius Abure and his associates to assert control over the party’s leadership.

In a unanimous judgment delivered by a three member panel, the court described the suit as frivolous and devoid of merit, and consequently dismissed it. The appellate court also faulted the earlier interim order issued by the Nasarawa High Court against Senator Usman, describing it as reckless and made without jurisdiction.

The court further held that the constitution of the interim committee remains an internal affair of the party, noting that the suit at the lower court was wrongly directed against INEC rather than addressing internal party processes. It subsequently affirmed the lower court’s judgment and awarded a cost of ten million naira against Abure, the former national chairman.

Although Abure has indicated plans to approach the Supreme Court, such a move may only deepen what the appellate court already characterised as an abuse of judicial process. This is particularly in light of the Supreme Court’s earlier pronouncement affirming the expiration of his tenure and the dissolution of his national executive. Any further litigation will ultimately rest on his discretion, alongside the attendant consequences.

Beyond the legal victories, what Governor Otti has demonstrated is a deeper lesson in leadership. His actions reflect resilience, focus, strategic thinking and foresight. True leadership requires the ability to anticipate outcomes and act with clarity in the present, qualities that have defined his approach.

As Governor of Abia State, he has applied the same principles to governance, driving reforms that have restored development, strengthened institutions and repositioned the state for sustained progress. Through deliberate planning, strategic partnerships and an effective network of relationships, Abia is steadily emerging from years of stagnation into a model of purposeful governance. Notably, these milestones have been achieved in less than three years in office.

The broader takeaway is clear. From his distinguished career in the banking sector to his stewardship of Abia State and his influence within the Labour Party, Governor Otti has consistently demonstrated a leadership style anchored on results. His trajectory continues to attract attention, with many Nigerians and observers expecting even greater impact in the years ahead.
