ABIA’S ACHIEVEMENTS CANNOT BE ERASED BY ULTIMATUM: KALU KALU MUST RESPECT ARISE NEWS’ INDEPENDENCE

Kalu Kalu’s letter turns a request for verification into an attempt to dictate a newsroom’s decisions. Its central demand is indefensible: accept his sponsored trip within seven days or retract favourable statements about Governor Alex Otti’s infrastructural performance.

A politician’s deadline is no test of truth.

Abia State’s projects do not cease to exist because ARISE News declines a travel sponsorship. Roads cannot be wished away by correspondence, and public achievements cannot be cancelled by a candidate seeking electoral advantage.

Port Harcourt Road, Aba, provides a concrete example. THISDAY’s May 14, 2025 article documented its reconstruction under Governor Otti and identified Julius Berger’s involvement. Kalu Kalu must confront that specific record rather than dismiss Abia’s achievements wholesale as television graphics and press releases.

For Abia State administration, the answer is firm: development must be judged against the projects delivered and their effect on the people. Political ambition gives no candidate the authority to erase documented work through sweeping declarations.

ARISE News also has a clear defence. The station interviewed Kalu Kalu and published his allegations against Governor Otti on October 2, 2026. Its coverage included his proposed sponsorship and his challenge over projects in Ohafia. He received a national platform to present his case.

Having received that opportunity, he now seeks to impose conditions on the station’s journalism. That demand deserves a direct rejection.

ARISE News’ editorial independence is not included in the price of transportation, accommodation, logistics or security.

An offer to fund a trip does not purchase the right to determine its timing, scope or conclusions. Nor does it entitle the sponsor to demand retractions if the offer is declined. ARISE serves its audience through its editorial judgment; it cannot be reduced to an instrument of a governorship campaign.

The threat to petition the National Broadcasting Commission adds no evidence to the letter. Kalu Kalu identifies no specific project report that his letter proves false. Instead, he proposes treating refusal of his offer as proof of false reporting. That reasoning is untenable.

If he claims a road does not exist, he should name the road and present his evidence. If he alleges false attribution, he should establish who executed it. If he challenges expenditure, he should produce the records supporting his allegation. The burden of substantiating his accusations cannot be discharged by issuing an ultimatum.

Abia State deserves a political debate that acknowledges visible development while examining the administration’s record. ARISE News deserves the freedom to report achievements, question candidates and pursue investigations without being commanded by a prospective beneficiary of its coverage.

Kalu Kalu is free to contest Governor Otti. He is free to challenge government claims. But he cannot make his campaign’s preferred conclusion the compulsory position of a television station.

Abia’s development record stands on evidence. ARISE News’ independence stands above campaign pressure. Neither can be surrendered to a seven-day ultimatum.
