THE SAD REALITY OF NIGERIA IN THE TECHNOLOGICAL SPACE
BY NNATE ERNEST

Nigeria is the most populous black nation with talented and beautiful individuals. Nigeria’s 2023 population is estimated at 223,804,632 people at mid-year and equivalent to 2.78% of the total world population, which signals a good place for foreign investment and great use of technology. Nigeria may be able to boast of having the most number of tech startups in Africa but lags in several other significant areas.

Due to poor infrastructure, inadequate planning and weak policies by the government, Nigeria has not been able to make any substantial progress in the technological space. Countries like Rwanda, Botswana, Tanzania, and South Africa are on the right path to a digitized economy. Nigeria seems slow and less concerned about embracing such opportunities.

Most countries use robots, artificial intelligence, and smart systems to solve various problems in their economy, yet we can’t boast of a system in place that is being fixed by these concepts. The Nigerian government should create an environment that can better foster the development and access to tech skills for Nigerians. The country still struggles with poor electricity, identity management, and internet connectivity, which affects access to new technological concepts.

It’s difficult for tech startups to thrive and grow in the country because the government policies act as a killer joy working to frustrate the talents that should sprout from the country’s tech space.

I believe the government should create a well-structured plan and make strategic moves to make Nigeria a strong technological Nation. This involves:

  • Funding Startups with low interest.
  • Sound policies.
  • Revolve the country around technology.

The world is transitioning to an information age where human capital development and good technology are very important to be a global player and not a mere spectator.
