Lokpanta Market: Governor Otti’ is Desirous of Protecting Life and Property.
Few days after Governor Alex Otti met and had discussions with the leaders of Umunneochi and the leaders of Hausa/Fulani Community respectively, we continued our solution-finding meeting when representatives of Abia state government led by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, PhD, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander McDonald Ubah Rtd,, Special Adviser on Home Land Security, Mr. Chukwunenye Alajemba and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma met with the leaders and representatives of the Hausa/Fulani community from Lokpanta as we deepened our dialogue geared towards finding a lasting solution to the security challenges confronting Lokpanta in Umunneochi LGA of the state, especially as it concerns the cattle market which is at the centre of the security crisis.
The representatives of the Government reminded the Catlle dealers that Governor Otti was desirous of protecting the lives and property of all citizens and restated the position of the Governor that the decision to make the market a non-residential market was one of the strategies being adopted to ensure that sanity and security is restored in order to bring to an end the incessant kidnapping and killings happening around the area, and reminded the leaders of the Hausa/Fulani community that the initiative was in the interest of residents and traders alike, explaining that if the criminal activities were not nipped in the bud it would affect their businesses because most of their customers would also flee and begin to look elsewhere.
They commended the government for the demolition of illegal beer parlours, shanties and brothels that harboured criminals and admitted that since the demolitions took place, kidnapping and other criminal activities have reduced drastically, and disclosed that they had on their own in the past arrested suspected criminals and handed them over to law enforcement agencies.
They further declared their unflinching support to the government’ in ts decision to fence the entire market and profile all the traders with a view to separating genuine traders from criminals hiding in the market to perpetrate criminality, but appealed to the government to assist them secure another location where they could live together as a group and be free from possible attack by criminals.
