A WORD TO WHATSAPP PLATFORM ADMINS
Being an Admin is not a licence to look away while a platform is converted into a theatre of defamation, false accusation and personal abuse.
Once an administrator becomes aware that a member is repeatedly publishing potentially defamatory allegations, the sensible course is to intervene, moderate the platform and preserve order. More importantly, any Admin who begins to encourage, endorse, repost, coordinate or actively facilitate such attacks may move from being a mere observer to becoming a participant whose own conduct can be examined legally.
Nobody should imagine that hiding behind another person’s name, allowing proxies to throw insults, or silently coordinating a campaign makes everybody invisible.
WhatsApp records have dates, timestamps, participants, responses, forwards and reactions. Screenshots can be preserved. Original chats can be retained. Patterns of coordination can be examined. Where necessary, the question will not merely be “Who typed the defamatory words?” It may also become “Who encouraged it, circulated it, adopted it, coordinated it or participated in its publication?”
Administrators should therefore wake up and take responsibility for the environment they manage.
This is not a threat. It is advance notice: moderate the platform, stop defamatory attacks and personal insults, and do not lend administrative authority to conduct that may ultimately require explanation before lawyers or a court.
