Abia Transport Revolution: Governor Otti Explains the Choice of Electric Buses

By Ebere Uzoukwa, PhD

With the commissioning of another 20 electric buses for the Abia Green Shuttle Service on Thursday, August 6, 2026, Governor Alex Chioma Otti has reinforced his administration’s determination to redefine public transportation in Abia State. More than an expansion of the state’s transport fleet, the initiative reflects a bold vision of building a modern, affordable, technology driven and environmentally sustainable transportation system that aligns with emerging global realities.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal, Umuahia, Governor Otti explained that Abia’s decision to embrace electric mobility was informed by changing global realities, including climate change, rapid technological advancement and the transition from fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources. As he aptly put it, “Transportation is the oil that lubricates the wheels of prosperity.”

According to the Governor, the policy is anchored on three key objectives of reducing transportation costs for government and commuters, protecting the environment and demonstrating government’s readiness to take the lead before attracting private sector investment. It is a strategic approach that places public investment at the centre of economic transformation.

The latest fleet fulfils the promise made in December 2025 when the first 20 electric buses were inaugurated. With larger cargo compartments and automated access for persons living with disabilities, the additional buses will significantly expand the reach, accessibility and operational efficiency of the Abia Green Shuttle Service within and beyond the state.

Beyond the buses, the Otti administration is redefining public transportation through modern infrastructure, technology driven payment systems, enhanced passenger experience and stricter traffic management. The commissioning of the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal, alongside renewed enforcement of traffic regulations, underscores a coordinated effort to build an orderly, efficient and reliable transport system.

Governor Otti also made it clear that his administration would not tolerate recklessness or acts of sabotage. “Nobody has any right to endanger the lives and property of others through acts of recklessness, impatience or poor judgment,” he warned, as he directed the relevant agencies to strengthen enforcement across the state.

Ultimately, Abia’s investment in electric buses is far more than transportation hence it is a deliberate policy to reduce the cost of mobility, promote environmental sustainability and position the state as a leader in the future of clean and efficient public transportation. In the Governor’s words, “We shall not be mere passengers in the vehicle of progress because we have the advantage to steer the wheels.” That declaration aptly captures the vision, ambition and enduring significance of the New Abia transport revolution.
