Hon. Obi Aguocha Calls for Urgent, Decisive Action from Igbo Leaders to Defend Our People
The Honourable Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North & South Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha has issued a strong call to Igbo political, cultural, and community leaders to rise in defence of Ndigbo in the face of escalating acts of discrimination and marginalisation across the country—particularly in Lagos State.
Hon. Aguocha expressed grave concern over credible reports of:
Street names of Igbo origin being erased and replaced with Yoruba names.
Lawfully acquired and developed Igbo estates and properties being branded “illegal” and demolished.
Certificates of Occupancy belonging to Igbos being arbitrarily threatened with revocation.
Systematic disenfranchisement of Igbos during the 2023 general elections.
He also condemned the composition of the newly inaugurated 8-member National Census Commission, which contains no Igbo representation, despite Igbos constituting an estimated 30% of Nigeria’s population, while the Yoruba alone hold four seats.
On the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Hon. Aguocha described it as a glaring injustice—especially when bandit leaders and terrorists in other regions freely operate openly without state prosecution.
“This is not the time for leaders to stay silent or complacent,” he stated. “The so-called ‘host community’ mantra is now being used to undermine every relevant constitutional rights that guarantee every Nigerian the freedom to live and own property anywhere in the Federation. We must confront these threats head-on before it is too late.”

The Southeast Caucus of the National Assembly to urgently table these matters on the floor of the Senate and House of Representatives, respectively.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo to send a high-powered delegation to the Lagos State Governor to address these issues directly. He pledged to personally join any such delegation.
He further demanded strict adherence to the Federal Character Principle to ensure equitable representation of all ethnic groups in national appointments and decision-making bodies, among others.
“We must speak now while it still matters,” Hon. Aguocha concluded. “History will not forgive our silence in the face of systemic injustice against our people.”
