I am pleased to announce that Abia State has been selected as the most suitable location to host a proposed Stroke and Neurovascular Centre following the state’s participation in the 2026 Sweden-Africa Neurosurgery Symposium in Gothenburg, Sweden.
This international recognition is a significant milestone in the ongoing transformation of our healthcare sector under the administration of His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR. It reflects the progress recorded in healthcare delivery, the availability of qualified medical specialists and the growing capacity of our health institutions to provide specialised medical services.
With stroke cases constituting a major public health concern across Africa, particularly in Nigeria, the proposed centre is expected to strengthen access to specialised treatment, diagnosis and comprehensive management of stroke and other neurovascular conditions, not only in Abia but potentially across Nigeria and West Africa.
The state’s participation in the international symposium, with the approval of the government through the Ministry of Health, was aimed at exploring strategic partnerships and opportunities for advancing specialised healthcare delivery.

This recognition comes shortly after the Ministry of Health was acknowledged nationally as a self-care champion, further underscoring our administration’s commitment to preventive healthcare, healthy lifestyles and improved access to quality medical services.
In another significant development, the Abia State Government has strengthened its public health emergency preparedness through the establishment of a multi-sectoral frontline preparedness and response technical working group.
Through various investments and interventions, the group has developed an Ebola Preparedness and Response Plan to ensure that the state is adequately positioned to prevent, detect and respond effectively to possible public health emergencies.
As part of these measures, the remodelled Mother and Child Specialist Hospital has been designated as an isolation facility for Ebola pending the completion of the Infectious Disease Hospital in Aba.
Additionally, the isolation facility at the Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Amachara, Umuahia, forms part of the state’s expanded capacity to manage Ebola and other infectious diseases.
I am also pleased to report that no cases of diseases of public health importance, including Ebola, Lassa fever, COVID-19, diphtheria, and cholera, were recorded in Abia State during the reporting period of October 18 to November 1, 2026. This is an encouraging development and reflects the importance of sustained surveillance, preparedness, public health education and coordinated interventions.
Furthermore, the Office of the Wife of the Governor, in collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, alongside relevant organisations, recently organised activities to commemorate World Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The initiative focused on educating women about breast cancer, encouraging preventive health practices and promoting regular medical screening for early detection.
I am equally pleased to announce encouraging progress in the implementation of our agricultural intervention programme across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state. The programme, being implemented in partnership with the respective local government areas, is designed to establish viable agricultural enterprises, attract private-sector investments, strengthen agricultural value chains and increase food production.
Beyond improving food security, the initiative is expected to create sustainable employment opportunities, stimulate economic activities in rural communities and open new investment opportunities across the agricultural sector.
The overall objective is to build a productive and sustainable agricultural economy that creates opportunities for our people while strengthening Abia’s capacity to contribute meaningfully to food production.
I am also pleased to announce that the government’s housing programme at the Pocket Layout has attracted tremendous interest from prospective homeowners and investors, with applications significantly exceeding the available residential units. The project currently has 173 residential units under development, but the number of expressions of interest processed had reached approximately 530 as of the last count. This level of interest is a strong indication of public confidence in the government’s housing initiatives and the growing attractiveness of Abia as a destination for residential investment. Given the overwhelming response, the government is considering adopting a lottery system for the allocation of the houses to guarantee fairness, transparency and equal opportunity for interested applicants.
Our administration is determined to ensure that the allocation process is conducted openly and credibly, without the irregularities and preferential practices associated with the old system.
Furthermore, a comprehensive needs assessment is ongoing across existing government housing estates and layouts to identify infrastructure deficiencies and determine areas requiring urgent government intervention. The assessment covers internal roads, utilities, security infrastructure and other essential facilities necessary to make these estates safe, accessible and conducive for residents. The government’s objective is not merely to provide residential buildings but to ensure that the surrounding infrastructure and essential services meet the needs of the people who will occupy them.
On the issue of abandoned federal housing estates, the government has also continued to demonstrate its commitment to supporting projects that will improve housing opportunities for Abians. The state has undertaken fundamental responsibilities, including land provision and other necessary interventions, while the media has been encouraged to sustain accountability in the implementation of such projects.
In furtherance of our administration’s commitment to promoting the creative economy, I am pleased to announce that the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Aba Fashion Week Showcase Limited. The partnership is designed to promote fashion, indigenous craftsmanship, entrepreneurship and the creative potential of our people.
The 2026 Abia Fashion Week will hold from November 24 to 27 in Aba, featuring exhibitions, street fashion displays, masterclasses and a grand finale featuring a runway fashion show on November 27. The programme is strategically designed to showcase indigenous talent, celebrate our cultural identity and strengthen Aba’s position as a major fashion and creative industry hub.
Through partnerships with relevant stakeholders, we are creating opportunities for young people, fashion entrepreneurs, designers, artisans and other creative professionals to showcase their talents, expand their businesses and benefit from the growing opportunities within the creative economy. This is another deliberate step towards diversifying our economy, promoting local enterprise and creating employment through the enormous creative potential of Abia people.
Preparations are also in top gear for a series of cultural, religious and entertainment activities designed to make the 2026 Christmas season memorable for residents and visitors to the state.
The Ministry, working with the organising committee, has engaged a technical vendor to handle the design and coordination of the proposed activities. The programme includes a concert and convention scheduled for December 12; a Children’s Christmas Party with the Wife of the Governor between December 16 and 17; and a Night of Praise featuring leading Nigerian gospel artistes on December 18.
Other activities include entertainment and dance events between December 18 and 21, as well as a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on December 22. These activities are expected to promote social interaction, celebrate our cultural and religious heritage, support the entertainment industry and provide opportunities for businesses and hospitality operators during the festive period.
I am also pleased to announce that the proposed Abia Tertiary Institutions Sports Fiesta will formally commence today, Wednesday, November 3 and run until November 6, 2026, at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
Approximately 1,850 participants are expected to take part in the sporting event, which is being organised through a collaborative effort involving the relevant ministries responsible for youth development and sports.
One of the major highlights of the fiesta will be the unveiling of a new civic engagement platform designed specifically for students of tertiary institutions across Abia State.
Preparations for the event were formally flagged off last week with the lighting of the Games Torch, symbolising the beginning of activities ahead of the official opening.
The fiesta is another deliberate investment in youth development, sporting excellence, leadership, social interaction and responsible citizenship.
Beyond the sporting competitions, the initiative provides an opportunity to identify and nurture emerging talents while encouraging students to become active participants in the development of their state.
From the international recognition of our healthcare system and the proposed establishment of a specialised stroke and neurovascular centre to improved public health preparedness, agricultural development, affordable housing, creative industry expansion and youth empowerment, the outcomes of this week’s State Executive Council briefing demonstrate the breadth of ongoing interventions across different sectors.
The administration of Governor Alex Chioma Otti remains focused on building strong institutions, expanding opportunities, improving public infrastructure and creating an environment where the talents and productive capacities of Abians can flourish.
These initiatives are not isolated interventions. They are interconnected components of a broader development agenda aimed at improving the quality of life of our people and positioning Abia State for sustainable economic growth.
The New Abia has continued to take shape through deliberate policies, strategic partnerships and measurable progress
