Leadership Lessons from Governor Alex Otti’s Library

Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, wants to unwind a little bit and share some secrets of his success. He’s excited to share with book loving Abians some collection of top ten globally celebrated leadership books found in his library that have shaped his perspective on governance and leadership.

As the former top banker, his library is a majestic sanctuary of knowledge, nestled within his opulent mansion. As you step inside, you’re enveloped by the warm, rich aroma of leather-bound tomes and the soft glow of table lamps.

The room’s architecture is a masterful blend of classic and contemporary elements. Towering shelves, crafted from dark, polished wood, stretch all the way to the ceiling, laden with an impressive collection of books on finance, economics, history, and literature. The shelves are adorned with intricate carvings, adding a touch of sophistication to the space.

The walls are painted a soothing shade of cream, providing a subtle backdrop for the vibrant hues of the books and the plush furnishings. A stunning, crystal chandelier hangs from the ceiling, casting a kaleidoscope of colors across the room.

The floor is covered with a sumptuous, Persian carpet, its intricate patterns and soft pile inviting you to linger. A comfortable, leather-upholstered armchair and ottoman are positioned in a cozy reading nook, complete with a floor lamp and a side table.

A stately, wooden desk, equipped with a plush, leather executive chair, dominates one end of the room. The desk is adorned with a few, carefully chosen artifacts, including a vintage, inkwell and a beautifully crafted, silver paperweight.

Throughout the library, there are numerous, comfortable seating areas, each one inviting you to sit, stay, and indulge in the vast, literary treasures that surround you. It is no surprise that he is eager to share knowledge around the world’s ivory Institutions.

Governor Otti believes that this book emphasizes the importance of understanding the purpose behind our actions. He adds that as a leader, it’s crucial to identify the “why” behind our decisions and communicate it effectively.

2. The Leadership Challenge by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner
Dr Otti smiles as he narrates that this book provides practical advice on how to become a better leader. It highlights the importance of setting a clear vision, empowering others, and leading by example.

3. Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Daniel H. Pink
His third book explores the science of motivation and how to create an environment that fosters engagement and productivity.

4. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
The banking giant turned politician said this book is a classic in the leadership space, this book provides practical advice on how to become more effective in our personal and professional lives.

5. Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin
As he sat back and took a deep breath, he held up this book and said: “This book highlights the importance of taking ownership and responsibility as a leader”. He added: “It provides valuable insights on how to build a high-performing team.”

6. The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni
This book, he said, explores the common pitfalls that teams face and provides practical advice on how to overcome them.

7. Dare to Lead: Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts. by Brené Brown
Abia’s executive governor, was quick to hint that this book emphasizes the importance of courage, vulnerability, and empathy in leadership. He added that it motivated him to stay focused in political career.

8. The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz
In pre-2023 years, the governor was share fond memories of how this book provided him valuable insights on how to navigate the challenges of leadership and build a successful organization.

9. Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter by Liz Wiseman
“This is my desire for Abia State.” Otti voiced with enthusiasm lacing his tone. He continued: “This book highlights the importance of creating an environment that fosters learning, growth, and innovation.”

10. The First 90 Days: Proven Strategies for Getting Up to Speed Faster and Smarter by Michael Watkins
Finally, Dr Alex Chioma Otti OFR declared that this book provides him practical advice on how to navigate the first 90 days in a new leadership role and set yourself up for success. It instrumental to his first 90 days as Abia State’s Chief Executive.

As Governor of Abia State, he told me he believes that education is key to unlocking the potential of our people. That’s why he’s committed to supporting literacy rates in our state. “Doc, you know reading is essential to governance, as it provides us with the knowledge and insights we need to make informed decisions.”. He continued.

“I urge everyone to take up reading, whether physical books or virtual books. It’s a habit that will enrich your life and empower you to become a better leader,” said Otti.
