Yesterday, 26/11/2024 Her Excellency, the First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, alongside her entourage, paid a courtesy and advocacy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Abia State, CP Danladi Isa, in commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
The entourage included the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Adeze Emetu, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Special Protection, and three Special Advisers.
During the visit, Her Excellency warmly welcomed the Commissioner of Police to the state and expressed her gratitude for his efforts in combating crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property. She emphasized the critical role of police officers as frontline defenders in the protection of citizens and highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration to address gender-based violence.
She further advocated for the establishment of a dedicated gender desk, equipped with the necessary tools and staffed by trained facilitators. This desk, she proposed, would work in collaboration with community stakeholders to tackle gender-related issues effectively.
In response, the Commissioner of Police warmly received the delegation and informed them of existing structures in the Police such as the Gender Section at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and the Juvenile and Women’s Center (JWC) at the divisional level, which are staffed by female resource personnel dedicated to handling gender-related cases.
He assured the delegation of the police’s commitment to improving their services in the fight against gender-based violence. He added that the ultimate goal remains to create a safe and secure environment free from fear and insecurity.
