NYSC Gives Fresh Update On 77K Monthly Allowance Payment

Weeks after the approval, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that it cannot confirm when the recently approved N77,000 monthly allowance for corps members will be implemented.

Earlier, the increase was pegged to start from July 2024, following the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, replacing the previous N33,000 allowance.

However, despite the official announcement, corps members were paid the old sum of N33,000 for September, creating confusion.

According to the NYSC, the delay in the implementation is from the government, as the necessary administrative processes must be completed before the new payments can begin.

While the agency acknowledged the approval, they remain uncertain about when the new allowance will be disbursed, as they await further action from the Federal Government.

According to NYSC Public Relations Officer, Caroline Embu,“It is a process. Everything is a process. After making the pronouncement, the government has to work on it to be able to pay. It is not as if it is automatic (immediately implemented) like that.

“If you remember even this minimum wage that we are talking about, has been announced since when (without implementation)? It is the same thing with NYSC corps members.

“I can’t say (if it is going to be implemented this month (October)). This is because the payment is done by the Federal Government, not NYSC. We don’t know when it is going to be implemented, just like everybody is waiting for the minimum wage.”
