IGP Takes Fresh Action Over Rivers Emergency Rule

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional personnel and resources to Rivers State.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the move is intended to bolster security, protect lives and property, and secure critical infrastructure in the state.

According to the statement, the deployed operatives will collaborate with the Armed Forces and other security agencies to forestall any breakdown of law and order in the South-South state.

It added that Egbetokun reassures citizens that while individuals have the right to seek legal redress, any unlawful gatherings, protests, or activities that threaten public peace will be met with the full force of the law.

The statement added, “The Nigeria Police Force emphasises that aggrieved individuals retain the right to seek legal redress through the appropriate judicial channels. Consequently, any attempt to exploit the situation through unlawful gatherings, protests, or activities to disrupt public peace will be met with the full force of the law. Citizens are urged to remain law-abiding, comply with all legal directives, and continue their daily activities without fear.

The Force said it remains committed to ensuring peace and stability and urged residents to remain law-abiding and go about their daily activities without fear.

It added, “The Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining peace and security. Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities that may compromise public safety.

“Individuals or groups with criminal intent are hereby warned to stay away from Rivers State. Security forces are fully prepared to take decisive action against any threats to the peace and stability of the state.”

AttNews reports that President Bola Tinubu had, on Tuesday, declared a state of emergency in Rivers and suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, as well as members of the State House of Assembly for six months.

The President then appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas (retd) as the Sole Administrator for the state.
