Prince Okey Kanu’s Conduct Raises Questions About Collaboration with Abia Media

At the unveiling of ATTNews’ Abia North office, Prince Okey Kanu, Abia State’s Commissioner for Information, attended on behalf of Governor Alex Otti, whose humility and servant-leadership ethos are widely acknowledged. While the Governor’s absence was understandable due to prior commitments, his delegation of Kanu underscored the importance of the event. However, Kanu’s approach during the ceremony left room for reflection on the relationship between government officials and grassroots media.

A Call for Improved Communication

Kanu expressed dissatisfaction that he was not “personally invited,” despite ATTNews’ documented efforts to extend invitations and reminders to both the Governor and his office. This misunderstanding highlights the need for clearer communication channels. Dr. Uduma Nnate, ATTNews’ Publisher and a member of the Abia State Task Force on Petroleum, shared that he had previously introduced himself to Kanu, only to receive a curt “Who are you?”—a response that contrasts with Governor Otti’s reputation for approachability. While the Governor promptly acknowledged ATTNews’ gratitude after the event, Kanu’s silence post-event suggests an oversight in fostering collaborative ties with local media.

Balancing Journalism and Civic Engagement

In his remarks, Kanu advised ATTNews to “focus on journalism and leave politics to politicians.” This guidance, though well-intentioned, overlooks the intrinsic link between media and governance. As a former gubernatorial candidate (2011) and Director-General of the Abia North Political Project, Dr. Nnate’s work exemplifies how media and civic engagement often intersect. Nigeria’s media landscape thrives on diverse voices, with 63% of citizens relying on local outlets for civic education (NUJ Report, 2023). Encouraging dialogue, rather than siloed roles, aligns better with Governor Otti’s vision of a “working partnership” emphasized in his speech at the event.

A Path Forward: Strengthening Partnerships

The exclusion of ATTNews from state events, including the Governor’s monthly media chats, raises concerns about inclusivity. In a state rebuilding trust—where 58% of citizens desire more transparent government-media collaboration (Abia Civic Trust Survey, 2023)—open engagement is vital. While Kanu’s remarks may reflect a personal perspective, they underscore a broader need for officials to mirror Governor Otti’s humility and accessibility.

Conclusion: Building Bridges, Not Barriers

Abia’s progress hinges on unity, not division. ATTNews remains committed to ethical journalism and constructive discourse, values echoed in Governor Otti’s leadership. It is hoped that all public servants, including Prince Okey Kanu, will prioritize collaboration over misunderstanding, ensuring media partnerships thrive as pillars of democracy. As the Governor wisely noted, “A working partnership” benefits all—a vision worth embracing without reservation.

Let’s foster dialogue, not disconnect. Abia’s future deserves nothing less. 🌟
