From Neglect to Revival: Otti’s Aba Transformation
Ebere Uzoukwa, Ph.D
Aba, the economic nerve center of the South East and South South, has experienced a transformation under Governor Alex Otti’s administration. Once a thriving commercial hub, Aba earned the nickname “the Japan of Africa” due to its entrepreneurial prowess and craftsmanship. However, years of neglect and abandonment led to infrastructure collapse, decay, and rot. The city’s roads became impassable, streets were littered with refuse, and the once-thriving markets were in shambles.
Aba’s contributions to the early development of Igboland cannot be overstated. The city attracted Ndigbo from other states and many Nigerians, who came to develop and drive craftsmanship, commerce, trade, and industry, propelling early development in Nigeria. Aba’s trade and commerce connections extended to African countries such as Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon, which continue to purchase shoes, leather, and allied products from the city. The city’s famous Ariaria International Market became a hub for international trade, with merchants from across the continent coming to purchase goods.
Despite its rich history and economic significance, Aba was left to decay by successive administrations. The city’s infrastructure crumbled, and its economy suffered. However, Governor Otti recognized the economic benefits of rebuilding Aba and gave the city prioritized attention. His administration aimed to reposition Aba, providing necessary business enablers and infrastructure to attract local and foreign investors.
The governor’s key initiatives and short-term interventions include the reconstruction of critical roads, such as the 6.8-kilometer Port Harcourt Road, a vital economic artery being handled by Julius Berger, nearing completion. Other road projects completed and ongoing include University Road, Abayi; Green Avenue; Udeagbala Road; Shallom Road; Umuimo Road; Old Express Road; Abak Road; Queens Street; Osisioma-Ekeakpara Road; Omuma Road; Ngwa Road; and Jubilee Road. These projects have improved the city’s infrastructure and enhanced the quality of life for its residents.
Governor Otti also committed to ensuring a reliable electricity supply through the Aba Independent Power Project, powered by Prof. Bath Nnaji-led Geometrics. This initiative aims to provide 24/7 electricity supply to boost economic activities, enhance security, and improve the overall quality of life for Aba residents. Additionally, Governor Otti launched a solar lighting project to illuminate Aba, boost nightlife activities, and enhance security.
The Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), driven by Architect Uche Ukeje, has played significant roles in Governor Otti’s comprehensive blueprint to restore Aba’s glory. GADA’s efforts have focused on infrastructure rejuvenation, aligning with the governor’s vision to transform Aba into a thriving economic hub.
Abians have continually shown unwavering support for Governor Otti, who has proven himself as a true and patriotic leader. His committed efforts and practical actions have begun to restore Aba’s lost glory, earning him recognition from stakeholders, including former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, former Governorship candidate Dr. Uchechukwu Ogah, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Rt. Honourable Benjamin Kalu, and Senator Nkechi Nworgu.
As Governor Otti continues to work tirelessly to transform Aba, it is clear that his vision for the city is rooted in a deep understanding of its history, culture, and economic significance. His administration’s efforts to revitalize Aba’s infrastructure, enhance its economic competitiveness, and improve the quality of life for its residents are a testament to his commitment to the city’s rebirth. With Governor Otti at the helm, Aba is poised to regain its position as the economic nerve center of the South East and South South.
The impact of Governor Otti’s initiatives is already being felt across Aba. The city’s roads are being rebuilt, its markets are being renovated, and its economy is being revitalized. The people of Aba are beginning to see a glimmer of hope, a sense that their city is finally being restored to its former glory.
Governor Otti’s commitment to transparency and accountability has been a hallmark of his administration. He has ensured that the government’s finances are transparent, and that the people of Aba are informed about the progress of his initiatives. This approach has helped build trust between the government and the people, creating a sense of ownership and participation among Abians.
As Aba continues on its path to revival, it is clear that Governor Otti’s vision is not just about rebuilding the city’s infrastructure but also about restoring its people’s dignity and pride. With Governor Otti’s continued leadership, the city is poised to reclaim its rightful place as the “Japan of Africa” and a thriving economic hub.
