Amnesty International has accused the Sokoto State Government of unlawfully influencing the arrest of a social media user, Shafi’ u Umar Tureta.

In a public statement, Amnesty International expressed its concern over what it sees as a clear violation of human rights. ” Right now, plans are underway to drag Shafi’ u Tureta before a court in an attempt to seek prolonged remand in prison, giving them time to fabricate bogus charges against him, ” the group alleged.

Amnesty International also called for Tureta’ s immediate and unconditional release, describing the actions of the Sokoto State Government as unacceptable. The organization condemned the rising wave of human rights violations in Sokoto, demanding that the state government take steps to end this troubling trend.

The human rights group further urged the government to shift its focus toward more pressing issues in the state, including the alarming levels of poverty, the large number of out- of- school children roaming the streets, and the growing insecurity that continues to threaten the lives of Sokoto’ s residents.

This incident has raised concerns over freedom of expression and the safety of citizens who use social media to voice their opinions in Sokoto State.
