EROSION THREAT IN AMAEKPU AND THE BAKASSI EXPERIENCE.
Without being immodest, BAKASSI is one of the best layouts in Amaekpu in terms of road network, and beautiful structures.
BAKASSI is a layout inhabited by some prominent Amaekpu sons & daughters.

In no particular order, we have within the Layout Capt. David Nwoke, Popular UMUEJIMA, Chief Brown Onwuka Aki, Nnanna Eme Onwuka (Randy) Late Ojo Obuba, Chief Agbai Okorie, Pastor A.O. Uma, Uba Pharmacy, Chief Bukana & Lolo Love Ezema, Chief Uduma Nnate, Mr. Felix Eke, Mr. Mike Okpo to mention, but a few.
One might wonder what these influential personalities have done to checkmate the erosion threatening not only to pull down their buildings, but wash away the roads.

I can equivocally say that the residents of BAKASSI Layout have committed more than Ten Million Naira battling with the erosion menace on that road from levies, and donations amongst the Residents. As a stakeholder, I have the facts, and figures.
Recently, Mr. Randy spent millions of Naira to make the road accessible during the funerals of his late Mum.
Presently, Mr. Mike Okpo lives each day as it comes. He is a pensioner with a serious health challenge that has not only impeded his movements, but incapacitated him thereby living a solitary life.

His house hangs precariously on a cliff created by the erosion which has formed a deep gully measuring more than 30 meters deep. Part of his fence has already been “swallowed” by the gully.
Some government officials have been invited several times to the erosion site. They make promises without fulfillment. Sometimes, citing bureaucracy as an excuse.
Onyirimba road is another section of Amaekpu/ Elu that erosion is threatening residents. Some of the buildings within the environs have been destroyed.
We keep hearing about Ecological Funds supposedly meant for checking erosion menace, and other ecological related issues. Such funds are known to either allegedly have been diverted or looted.
What other means should Amaekpu deploy to get the attention of the government to do the needful, especially now that we have our Son very close to the seat of power.
We have pleaded & cajoled. Is it when we become importunate by persistently asking to the point of annoyance, that the govt. listens.
The matter has assumed a very distressing dimension with all its attendant depression.
It’s very important that something is done soon.
Sometimes, things that do not matter, become matters raising after things have gone wrong.
It’s part of the social contract with the people that voted them into power.
